Chapter 894

Rosalind was calling Lucian.

"I'll take this in the hallway."

Lucian stepped out with his phone in hand.

Lillian huffed dramatically. "Why the big secret? Can't he just answer here like a normal person?"

Rosalind suspected Lucian and Genevieve wanted some privacy for their intimate conversation. Probably all those sweet nothings lovers whisper to each other.

She forced a smile. "Don't mind him. Finish your dinner before it gets cold."

Lillian picked at her food. "I'll have someone bring you some sour snacks later. Would you prefer citrus fruits or sour gummies?"

Rosalind met her gaze with a tired smile.

Lucian never returned after taking the call. Rosalind and Lillian got ready for bed, settling under the covers together.

"Did Lucian go back to Quantum Innovations?" Rosalind asked.

She assumed his tech empire kept him occupied, and at this late hour, he likely wouldn't return.

Lillian nodded. "Probably. I texted him but got no reply. Must be swamped with work."

Rosalind felt relieved. His presence always unsettled her lately.

She tucked the blanket around Lillian. "Get some rest. Sleep is the best medicine."

Lillian snuggled closer. "You should sleep early too. Goodnight."

"Goodnight."

Lillian drifted off quickly, but Rosalind tossed restlessly.

Normally she cherished sleep. But ever since Lucian reappeared in her life, her thoughts had been in chaos.

Was he still at the office? Or with Genevieve? What were they doing together?

She tried blocking the images, but her traitorous mind kept conjuring scenarios. Lucian dominated her thoughts.

Time slipped by until her eyelids grew heavy. She was finally dozing off when-

Click.

The door creaked open. Rosalind bolted upright. "Who's there?"

Her first thought was an intruder.

Then she saw him.

Lucian had returned.

He approached the bed. The warm lamplight cast golden shadows across the room. Rosalind and Lillian lay curled together, the air sweet with floral perfume. The scene was peaceful, domestic.

Rosalind rubbed her sleepy eyes, blinking up at him like a confused kitten. Something in Lucian's expression softened momentarily.

He extended a small paper bag. "For you."

Rosalind blinked. "What's this?"

She peeked inside to find an assortment of tart candies and citrus treats.

Her breath caught. "You... bought these?"

Lucian arched an eyebrow. "Who else?"

Her heart fluttered strangely.

Why would he do this? Had he left just to get her these? Because she'd casually mentioned craving something sour earlier?

The questions burned her tongue, but fear kept them locked inside. Her lashes fluttered as she whispered, "Thank you."

"Don't mention it." His voice was cool. "Consider it thanks for looking after Lillian all these years."

So this was about his sister?

Rosalind didn't dare ask for clarification.

When she remained silent, Lucian turned. "Rest. I'll be in the living room if Lillian needs anything."

With that, he left.

He was staying the night?
